Akasaka has the highest concentration of first-rate hotels in Tokyo. Apart from that, it has a pleasant atmosphere of little streets filled by restaurants and boutiques. It is an upmarket and traditionally Japanese quarter, not unlike Ginza, but without the fluorescent lights, wide avenues, big department stores and language schools.
Akasaka has a few impressive buildings. The Akasaka Park Tower dominates a hill in the way reminding of a Japanese castle. Next to it, the modern TBS building has a intriguingly shaped roof.
The New Otani hotel, next to Akasaka Mitsuke station, has beautiful Japanese gardens and a revolving restaurant at the top. Going toward Tameike Sanno, the Prudential Financial tower (158m) was completed in late 2001. Next to Tameike-Sanno station, the Sanno Park Tower is a massive 194m edifice. Most towers around Akasaka being offices only, they are off-limit to visitors.
There are two moderately interesting shrines in Akasaka. The Hie Jinja (日枝神社) overlooks the city on one of its highest hill between Tameike Sanno and Akasaka Mitsuke. The second one is Toyokawa Inari Jinja (豊川稲荷神社), which resides along the Aoyama-dori, on the way from Akasaka Mitsuke to Aoyama.
